For those of you who haven’t heard of the latest 3 star surf documentary, it may be one to check out on one of the dreary Northwest rainy days.

It’s a little more than a standard documentary with beautiful HD footage, or one with a compelling story that makes you walk away a changed person. Not saying that Surfwise won’t change some or your views or thoughts, but there are many scenes that make you laugh and go… “Did they just refer to sex by the kids as “fucking”?” That’s why it gets AGR certification.

Dorian ‘Doc’ Paskowitz, a man of many wisdoms, lives a life the standard American would consider to be insanity. 9 kids. None put through the education system. 24 foot motorhome as the mobile housing unit. Yet their lifestyle breeds them to be 3 things, “a bum, a pro surfer, or a rock star”. Two of these would be considered desirable for most and well… the third for some of us. Me included.

“Eat healthy, live clean, surf clean.”

I think he should have added, “live primitively”

Some have dabbed into primitive life and if gas prices keep rising, the next trend will be “a bum”. One who lives primitively away from raging gas prices and standard life.

Surfwise explores this life and shows it. There is no persuasion involved. Nor did I feel like having 9 kids and becoming a surf bum. But it did do it’s job of churning some thoughts.
