AGOODREED ULTRAPOST! CHILE COORESPONDANTS ARE ALIVE! 28.07.08
Hello World. Benivenidos a la internet.
Hell. We flew in, and for the first 13 days of the trip we have spent a total of 10 minutes on the internet. The saying goes
while traveling, the less time spent on the internet, the more fun you be havin’. But it feels damn good to have fingers glued to a keyboard again.
After 24 hours of landing we hooked up with the “Big Show”. He’s somewhat of a big deal down here as you can see above. Straight out of the UK he’s been throwing down some serious old school hammers. Not to mention he hasn’t cut his hair in 6 years. We haven’t cut ours either. He’s a slayer.
For the first couple days we were cruisin’ around. Mountain touring. No new snow = small park days and beer sippin’. As our hearts were jerked around with the falty snow forecasts of “www.snow-forecast.com”, the storm finally arrived late night last Tuesday. A glorious Wednesday. Blue skies and 2 feet of fresh. Unfortunately, a late night of partying the night before, and an unforgettable 3:30 am powder run home, we plugged in our camera charger to the wrong circuit and blew every fuse in the house. Hard to believe……… The best day of the trip so far went undocumented by photos.
After a few days of powder cowboys, the AGoodReed team began practicing for the “Freestyle Tour at Valle Nevado” presented by Rossignol and Lippi. Our newest addition to the team, Ralph began working with Mr. Gillis on tricks for the new competition. Just like any snowboarder out of Swisssaland, ie ISENSEVEN, he likes lots of fancy tricks. Ralph claims he knows the fellas from ISENSEVEN and when ever we reference the movie he gets a foul taste in his mouth because us Americans jock the movie.
Ralphy tailblocking the meadow of Valle Nevado. Proper. I guess spending 50+ hours in your snowboard boots doesn’t prevent you from competing in a big air and doing tailblocks.
Ralph taught Doctor Gillis Truckdrivers. The doctor stomped one in the competition on Saturday landing him in 3rd place. Ralph claimed that because he taught The Doctor the trick that he should buy him beers for the rest of the night….. just another irrational statement by our Swisssa friend.
The only picture we have of the truckdriver is this one.
The photographer for the competition was a local bystander. He may or may not have been blind. Sadly enough this was the best shot of the 20 photos he took.
After all was said and done. Doctor Gillis made the podium along with a local Chilean Tomas in second and a fellow Canadian Tamo in 1st. Prizes we silly. A pair of gloves, thermals and ONE Redbull. Just ONE Redbull……
We do a lot of hanging out in the parking lot. Looking for tickets on days we don’t want to purchase.
Mario ordering Barry to come about.
Amongst all the fun, we did run into a little accident. Our fearless Chilean Tour Guide Mario Hevia suffered the patented snowboard injury. Grade 3 shoulder separation. After a girl complained about breaking her arm during our last run… (Everyone knows you don’t jinx yourself like that), Mario separated his shoulder. A week off the snowboard and he’s back riding tomorrow. A salud to Mario.
That’s it and that’s all for now. Shout out to all the friends at home. And a farewell to Dr. Gillis. Have fun in LA bro bro! You won’t be disappointed in the substitute.
Though we’re only into the first seven months of 2008, holy crap, things are good. We’ve just finished our first demo tour of Japan, Jake’s learned to shave, The Lodge is cranking out new board designs; including the Park Rocker, AND NOW CHRIS DUFFICY JOINS THE TEAM!
With his smooth style and positive attitude, this Vancouver BC resident is as loved for his smile as he is for his big mountain riding and progressive rail skills. Throughout his coaching career at Camp of Champions, and across editorial pages and in video bangers like “Return of The Wildcats” and “True Life,” Ducy makes the shred life look easy, fun and friendly. “Snowboarding’s one sport that you definitely have to pay to play, says Du, “I’ve been through so many life and death experiences and I still keep coming back for more. There are things in my mind that I still want to try; things that I can’t even explain! You’ve just got to want it; love for snowboarding (and coffee!) can always make success a reality! I feel at home with Signal.”
According to pro rider and Signal team manager, Matt Hammer, “Chris is not only anunbelievably talented snowboarder but he’s also a person full of love andintegrity. Welcome to the family!”
Chris will soon be working on new board designs at The Lodge. Come on down! As well, you can see Chris at Camp of Champions this summer and later this fall in Alterna Films’ “KnockOut.”
Anybody can regurgitate a mass-distributed press release. But only agoodreed regurgitates and then spreads it on an English muffin for your enjoyment. Here is your Dufficy flavored muffin:
“Almost Dead” a film by NC Productions. Produced, directed, and filmed by Leland McNamara and Sam Hiltner. Featuring: Lucas Wilson, Kyle Martin, Vincent Remmel, Jonny Malanga, Jason and Aaron Robinson, Kyle Miller, Skylar Thornton, and friends. Shot in HD in Oregon, Washington, Montana, California and Colorado.
NC’s Jack of all trades Leland McNamara was kind enough to answer some questions for agr. Enjoy. agr: Name and rank/job/position? Leland McNamara: Leland, aka Lroy. Direct, shoot, edit, and all that other stuff.
agr: What is the NC Productions story? Leland McNamara: NCp is just a group of hardworking young kids from the west, all trying to make this snowboarding thing happen. Eat, sleep, party, and snowboard. That’s it.
agr: Who is the crew? Leland McNamara: It changes a bit every season, but this years crew was. Lucas Wilson, Kyle Martin, Vincent Remmel, Jonny Malanga, Jason and Aaron Robinson, Kyle Miller, Skylar Thornton, and many other good friends.
agr: How many Olympic gold medals do these guys have? Leland McNamara: No Olympic standouts here. Good contests are rare now days, we usually just go to the backcountry.
agr: What does NC stand for? Leland McNamara: NC is our good friend Nate Chute’s initials. He lost his life a good number of years back but I always thought he embodied what snowboarders should be. He was always about fun and friendships. We try to make our movies the way he would. About fun and friends!
agr: Do you create an outline of the type of footage you want (powder, park, urban etc.) or is it more spontaneous? Leland McNamara: Our winter usually just follows the weather we don’t really know what it will do so sometimes were in the backcountry or sometimes were doing rails. We don’t really focus much on park. there are good parks everywhere and good kids riding them, so we just like to highlight other things. We do do some park shoots in the spring though just to keep it all well rounded.
agr: Location of the season? Leland McNamara: Of course I can’t tell you the best place. I could tell you the second best?
agr: Don’t ever go to…. Leland McNamara: I don’t know. Every where is good cause every different place provides something new. agr: Tell us a joke about kids from Montana. Leland McNamara: There is nothing funny about those kids.
agr: What’s the song from the teaser and why is it not Elton John’s “Rocket Man”? Leland McNamara: Elton John can’t cut it. So we got White Denim - Shake, shake, shake.
agr: On a scale of 0-10 (10 high), how is the NC groupie scene? Leland McNamara: It used to be high, but most of us have chickies now so it’s low. A few of the guys a making a come back though so it’s probably 10 for them.
agr: Why Bend? Leland McNamara: ‘Cause it’s a great town, but it’s getting old so we might branch out.
agr: Best brewery? Leland McNamara: Anyone with free samples. They’re hard to find, but that make them better.
agr: Best Trailblazer? Leland McNamara: Our Best Trail blazer would be Aaron Robinson, but if your talking B-ball I’d have to say I liked it when Rasheed was there.
(Ed. note: agreed on ARob, but as for B-ball, the correct answer is BRoy.)
agr: Best snack? Leland McNamara: Sour snacks. Hell yeah.
agr: Best Spice Girl? Leland McNamara: Definitely Beckham.
agr: If there is one thing that agoodreeder’s learn from this interview it should be… Leland McNamara: Snowboard ’cause it’s fun. If it’s not fun for you then your doing something wrong.
agr: And finally, a 16-year-old girl from Oregon recently added me on Myspace. I have no idea who she is. I am not 16. Did I accept her friend request? Leland McNamara: I’d bet you accepted her. Didn’t you?
Peace! -Lroy
(Ed. note: this is correct.)
Signal Snowboards: Limited Edition Colorways; Park Series. 26.06.08
Signal recently announced the limited edition colorway project, mission, dance; Signal Limited!
RELEASE TWO: Iced Lightning
Word on the streets is they will be announcing several different colorways over the summer. AGR hopes to see a few themed colorways. Possibly a Boston tribute? Celtics? Red Sox? 3 peat?
With my massive signing bonus from agr, I had the funds to make a trip over to Valle Nevado, Chile and do some snow surfing. Conditions were excellent; sunny with no clouds, 2 meters of snow (that´s over 6´ for those of you aquainted with the archaic US system), and more than 800 hectares of Chilean shRADness. All on opening day. Sick mode.
Chile in itself is a different breed. Aside from the snowboarding, the road from Santiago to Valle Nevado has a gnarly 59 switch backs. I´m talking serious switch backs, like the type where a bus has an ice cubes chance in hell of making it to said destination. Endless cliffs on one side and crumbling dirt walls on the other with a road wide enough for Mr. Bean´s whip. Throw in a few crazy Chilean drivers and it makes for an eventful day of shred.
Although Valle Nevado is a measly 36 kilometers from Santiago, a typical day can run up to 4 hours of travel time, one way. While agr did manage to throw me a large signing bonus, I had trouble negociating a helicopter for my trip so my local connections have shown me the correct Chilean way:
1. Wake up
2. Put on smelly snowboard boots and other rancid snowboard gear and walk to the bus with shred attire plus board
3. Take the bus from downtown Santiago and have everyone give you funny looks
4. Hitch hike from the gas station to the cross in Farellones
5. Hitck hike from the cross to Valle Nevado
6. Kiss the ground and thank a nondemoninational diety that you made it to Valle Nevado without going over the edge
As many of you snowboarder web surfers have noticed over the last couple weeks/months Stacks for the upcoming Think Thank cinematic production have been leaking one by one for some time now.
What is a stack you ask? It’s the sneak peek into next years top heavy hitters in the land of snowboard production of what may be, one of the most creative snowboard films yet to be released. There is nothing trendy about Think Thank. That’s because they are ahead of the trend. They are setting trends. You watch a stack, and immediately realize that your jib game is outdated. Triple nollie nose press combo? NoseTailNoseTail stall? Your mustache is too short. Your style is too in-tune.
You’re going to have to go pick up the newest of the dirty south to keep up with these boys. Donked out! Screamin’ and hustlin’.
And with that I give you what I call, Stacked up (*See Souljaboy Cover below). No I’m not referring to your high school math teacher that you still think about have size DD breasts. I’m talking the Stack Footy teaser. Producing the same amount of pleasure as staring at your high school math teachers teta’s.
For those who have been surfing, wakeboarding, consuming heavy amounts of alcohol after finals, traveling the world, or maybe just busy working for the last few weeks. I give you All the Moments wrapped up below. Enjoy!
Think Thank’s “Stack Footy” Teaser featuring all yours truly.
Chris Larson, Jesse Burtner, Ben Bogart, Mark Thompson, Johnny Miller, Gus Engle, Austin Hironaka, Nick Visconti, Sean Genovese, Chris Beresford
