AGR Meets: Ian Matteson
agr: Do you think that the really fat kids on the Maury show need to eat?
Ian Matteson: Yea. Fat kids GOTTA eat!
agr: I guess so. What is Fat Kids Gotta Eat, and how did it come to be?
Ian Matteson: It came to be one day when Brett Allen (my roomate) and I were in our garage transforming it into a studio for him to paint and me to shoot photos. We thought the name was fitting and we needed a website to show what we do best everyday or night. From art to snowboarding to just funny things along the way!
Fat Kid Tracks.
agr: What is a Fat Kids favorite snack?
Ian Matteson: Double cheese burger for sure
agr: From where?
Ian Matteson: From Wendy’s, accompanied by the largest vat of cola you can find to wash it down with.
Eatin’ french fries.
agr: Where is home base for the Fat Kids?
Ian Matteson: SL, UT.
agr: Are you and Brett the only Fat Kids?
Ian Matteson: Well, we are the original but our other roommate Joey who loves chili cheese fries is moving up in the ranks as well as some guest appearances from our other friends if we think they can eat enough.
agr: Are the SLC girls digging Fat Kids?
Ian Matteson: We get some love for sure.

agr: That’s good, but the SLC girls can get kind of tired. So the Fat Kids went on tour right?
Ian Matteson: Yeah they do kind of it lame so we left salt lake at 2 a.m. after a big birthday party to arrive at Big Sky, Montana for the first stop on the Tour of Montana.
agr: Wild. What was that like?
Ian Matteson: WelL, I was the sober driver but Brett and Joey both were three sheets to the wind sleeping and heckling me all the way to Montana.
agr: And you guys went snowboarding and stuff, and made videos, yes?
Ian Matteson: Oh yeah. We filmed everyday, night, afternoon, in stores, anything that happened was documented.
agr: Babe hunting?
Ian Matteson: Ha! It’s funny you ask. We saw few and far between. We dreamt of volleyball teams staying at our hotel but all we got was church youth groups and high school bands. DAMN!
agr: That is unfortunate. Tell me a story from the road.
Ian Matteson: So we went to this cabin out in the middle of nowhere (family friends amazing cabin) but anyways we were up there for a few days making moto jumps and berms and celebrating St. patty’s day when 6 wolves rolled up on us less than 6 feet from me Brett immediately ran to the cabin Joey and me started yelling and finally scared them off but we thought we were fat kid kabobs.
agr: Tell me your funniest joke.
Ian Matteson: Uhhh, probably when we found a semi that was pulling another semi facing the wrong way, Joey was sleeping me and Brett screamed and he was frightened to say the least.
agr: No way, that shit happened to me too! I actually pooped my pants and had to throw my shorts away. That is a good joke. Where was the best riding?
Ian Matteson: Big Sky. There was never any new snow on the trip so some big jumps and fun parks were probably the highlights.
agr: Where do the Fat Kids enjoy playing on snow the most: park, pow or the streets?
Ian Matteson: Pow for sure, but if there is no pow the parks fun to throw your weight around on.
agr: I agree. I am lazy and just like going down hills, not building drop in ramps, hiking stairs and whatnot.
Ian Matteson: More time setting up and hiking means less time riding.
agr: And more time looking for babes.
Ian Matteson: Exactly.
agr: What are the goals of sharing the adventures of the Fat Kids?
Ian Matteson: We want it to be seen as fun. Everyone can have as much fun as we do…well maybe. But it’s snowboarding that’s amazing and watching anyone from us to the big pros it should be all love and appreciation. Shout out to Airblaster for always supporting this.
agr: Right on, fun is hot. So is there going to be a Fat Kids movie, or just fun?
Ian Matteson: Fun + a movie all in one.
agr: Ooooooh.
Ian Matteson: In Montana we have probably more stupid useless footage than most snowboarders probably do so I am bound to make one.
agr: What kind of tunes did the Fat Kids listen too on the adventure?
Ian Matteson: Anything from club remix of “Roxanne” by The Police to records from 1903. Oh don’t you worry, we recorded that too.
agr: What are the Fat Kids up to for Spring Break? Getting hyphy in Cabo?
Ian Matteson: Ha that was spring break for us–the Montana trip. But next year we are thinking BOOZ CRUZ.
agr: Anything else you want to say about the Fat Kids?
Ian Matteson: See you in Hollywood.
agr: Now, Ian, some questions about yrself. In addition to being the point guard of the Fat Kids, you are an accomplished photographer. How did you get your trigger finger?
Ian Matteson: Well, coming up in school in Montana there was no art in my high school. My moms close friend was a photographer and I started to take an interest in it.
agr: And you are studying photography?
Ian Matteson: Yeah, I go to school at the University of Utah for photo, 3rd year.
agr: Holler. How are you guys doing in March Madness?
Ian Matteson: They lost. Ha I don’t follow many sports either
agr: Neither do I, but I drink hella protein shakes. So back to photography. Do you see yourself making a career in “action sports” photography or some other arena?
Ian Matteson: Meh, I want to do everything photo the action sports game is kinda a joke no one takes you serious and lots of drama around it.
agr: What about shark photography? That would kick ass.
Ian Matteson: Haha. The housing for cameras are expensive, but damn, never thought about it like that.
agr: Consider it, or take pictures of pretty girls. That would be neat. Ian, you are pretty much the reigning champ of Yobeat’s “Firing Squad.” Did you get a plaque or something?
Ian Matteson: Haha! Funny you ask. They changed it after I went to win all sorts of goodies. I got a t-shirt I believe, and being a fat kid I dropped ketchup on it first day of wearing it. It was white, need I say more?

agr: Hahaha! Take that Yobeat. We will send you a big check for being rad. We have bills coming out of our ears over here.
Ian Matteson: Haha! Great man, fat kid stimulus sounds just fine to me.
agr: Hell yeah. “Yes We Can” get another cheeseburger. Lightning round session. You ready?
Ian Matteson: Fire.
agr: Lindsay Lohan: hot or not?
Ian Matteson: Not.
agr: That is incorrect. I will try to forgive you. Where are the babes hotter: Utah or Montana?
Ian Matteson: Utah.
agr: Ugg boots: sexy or no?
Ian Matteson: Sexyyy.
agr: Should all of my questions be about babes?
Ian Matteson: Ha! It’s your questions.
agr: How did it go with Brett and the high schooler at the pool? (Thanks for the tip Wanken!)
Ian Matteson: Some drunk barney cut in while he was working up his courage, so it was a lonely night for him.
agr: Probably better that way. No more girl questions. Whose photography do you admire?
Ian Matteson: Ruhter, Barash, Wright, and Blotto. Also, personal favorite Gonzalo Tudela.
agr: If the Fat Kids had an all expense paid trip, where would you go and what would you do?
Ian Matteson: New Zealand and da boys.
agr: Best movie ever?
Ian Matteson: Snowboard- Robot Food and Airblaster flicks. Hollywood- Heavyweights.
agr: If you had to be Fat Animal, what animal would you be?
Ian Matteson: Well I’m a bear for sure, Brett’s a moose, and Joey is the mouse that never stops eating.
agr: What are your plans for the summer?
Ian Matteson: Maybe be a bum in hood. Shoot photos. Hope to make some money.
agr: Dude, I got bad news for you: there are no babes in Hood. There are little rich kids that are way better at snowbarding than me.It is the most depressing place on the planet.
Ian Matteson: Damn man, your bringing me down. Whistler has been rad for the last few summers, but I was thinking switch it up to hood.
agr: I am going to Cancun, it is Spring Break year round there. You can wear flip-flops and spike your hair year round!
Ian Matteson: Haha for sure I need some gel stat!
agr: Who out there in the snowboard world is doing it right, and who is doing it wrong?
Ian Matteson: I always used to think about why Travis Parker stopped riding for videos or sponsors or Scotty Wittlake but those guys are doing it right– just having fun. Love Celtek. The Leines Bros. Capita. All the guys that don’t want fat checks from the man Burton or people ruining why we are out there.
agr: One more question: the hottest babe of all time is…
Ian Matteson: Adriana from “The Hills.”
agr: Fair enough. You ready to wrap this thing up?
Ian Matteson: Wrap it and send it to post.
agr: Any final words?
Ian Matteson: Amped to be stoked.
agr: Definitely bro dude man.
